Each year across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia brings children and books together to celebrate Book week. This year’s book week was from the 18th to 24th of August and the theme was ‘Find your Treasure’.
To celebrate book week students (and teachers) at each of our sites came to school dressed as one of their favourite story book characters and completed book week activities in their classes.
Students from our Willagee site also participated in a book week parade with Caralee Community School. Students from pre-primary to year three went to the Willagee Library to listen to an author talk about the process of writing a book. Students from C block met the author Sabrina Dudgeon, who is descended from the Bardi people from north of Broome and the Gija people in the East Kimberley. Her story Lilli and Shadow in Trouble was inspired by her Nanna and the stories she shared. Students from A Block met Rebecca Flannigan, who is an author as well as an early childhood teacher and opera singer. All the students enjoyed meeting the authors and hearing them talk about the writing process.
Students from our Bull Creek site also participated in a book week parade and incursion with Bull Creek Primary School students. The students listened to Wendy Binks, the author and illustrator of the book Where’s Stripey? talk about how a book is created. Wendy walked the students through the process of writing and creating a book and did some guided drawing of an emu chick with the students.
Students from our Beeliar site celebrated book week with a dress up day, class activities and a book fair in the school library.
