Virtue of the Fortnight: Respect for Self

What Is Respect for Self?

Self-respect is indicative of how you view yourself. And showing self-respect keeps your positive feelings about you flowing and growing. Feeling good about yourself and demonstrating self-respect are a chicken and egg situation: it can be difficult to tell which comes first.

Self respect is defined as holding yourself in esteem and believing that you are good and worthy of being treated well.

Why Practice It?

When you practice self-respect, you will feel more positive emotions and thoughts about yourself. Also, when you experience more positive emotions and thoughts about yourself, self-respect will come naturally.

How Do You Practice Respect for Self?

You choose to respect yourself and consider your own feelings. You avoid making self-deprecating comments and do not compare yourself or your life to others. You take responsibility to make positive changes. You can say ‘I don’t know.’

I treat myself with respect because I deserve kindness. I enjoy the person I am becoming. I am taking care of myself and focusing on my health. I am a good and kind person.
