As part of the lead up to our NAIDOC celebrations, on Thursday 24th June our Willagee students were very fortunate to be a part of a traditional Smoking Ceremony. Pop Neville, a highly regarded Fremantle LDC and Beeliar Elder performed the Smoking Ceremony and had recently performed it for the “Dream Time at the G” at Optus Stadium.
The smoking ceremony is a traditional Noongar ritual used to not only cleanse and purify a specific area, but it cleanses the spirit, body, and soul whilst you are on Noongar Country. It also helps to ward off warra wirrin – bad spirits and to bring in the blessings of the kwop wirrin – good spirits.
